How YOU can make a 7-String Carved Lyre |
| This
smaller lyre, with no sound box is only pentatonically tuned,
which allows a harmonious and free style of play. It is therefore
ideal for beginners and especially suitable for children up
to nine years of age.
The 7 String Carved Lyre is currently available in Sheok or Tasmanian
Oak, and finished with 'Livos' oil.
This instrument is suitable for children and adults. For younger
children, we recommend that the third, seventh and tenth notes be
silenced.
For these ages, neither minor nor major scales are suitable, but
the "mood of the fifths" available in the pentatonic sequence (D,
E, G, A and B) is recommended.

How to make a 7 String Lyre |
First,
you cut your lyre from a strong piece of Australian timber (Sheoak).
Then, after marking the centre of your Lyre, you drill holes with
a drillpress (see below), to allow access to the centre of your
instrument. |
  |
Then, you carefully cut out the centre of your Lyre.
It's easy! Anyone can do it! |
Then,
you contemplate your design, and mark the wood with chalk. |
You can choose any design you like.
Tila chose a heart-shape for the centre of her Lyre. |
Then,
you begin carving your Lyre with traditional hand-carving tools.
Nisargam (below), the chief woodworker of Pulse Art Studios, is
on hand guiding and supporting you to create an instrument you truly
love.
This process allows for the freedom of your creative expression. |

As you can see, the process of creating this beautiful instrument
is easy and fun.
It is an opportunity to explore your creative potential. |

After your carving is complete, and the sanding is up to your standard,
you will varnish the Lyre to bring out the heart of the wood. |
After
varnishing, you will insert the pegs and string your own instrument.
When the three-day workshop ends, you are left with YOUR OWN beautiful,
hand-carved, stringed Lyre which you will take away with you.
You will learn how to tune, and care for your Lyre so that it gives
you a lifetime of fun and enjoyment. |
